What's in session today? Genetic Engineering!

Today in class we had to write an essay about our views on Genetic Engineering. My professor wanted, me, on March 20, 2014 to turn in my incomplete barely-thought-out opinion on genetic engineering. Great! I had my reservations going into class but I was silent enough and didn't shake my head and fidget too much during his lecture. Aw man, where do I begin...

Is cloning human beings moral or ethical? No. Why not? Because humans should not be cloned. In theory it sounds cool but putting it into reality is not practical. I would watch a science fiction or fantasy movie with cloned humans. I do not want to live in a world where there actually are cloned humans. What is the point in cloning humans?

I do not see the immediate benefits of cloning, nor do I see the long term benefits at all. Cloning people is morally wrong because what good comes out of it? I do not feel there is any good therefore the practice is unnecessary and should not be used. If it isn't broke why fix it? I feel science and technology can help create wonderful advantages in our society.

Where would human innovation and to an extent, human evolution be if there weren't any science and technology? Where would modern first world nations be if we didn't have refrigerators? Cars? Trains? Television? What if Einstein never found out about gravity and the third rule of motion? Many first world nations see the examples of luxury that technology and science bring every single day, while other countries that lack basic necessities do not have the comfort of having such lifestyles.

I love both just like the next person but I do not believe humans should be excessive when it comes to the next “discovery” or breakthrough in technology. Just because we can, doesn't mean we should. And even when we should there a bad people in this world who will use these miracles to destroy, dominate and conquer. Cloning, just seems wasteful in the grand scheme of things.

Let’s push cures for bone disease and Aids instead of giving funding to research labs whose goals are to experiment with genetic engineering to one day allow people the option to clone themselves. There are some issues best left to rational, intelligent people who have the masses best interest at heart. I do not want clones of Ted Bundy’s walking around. Nor do I want to see generational versions of Jeffery Dahmer because for every sane person there’s always three coo-coo persons who wants Satanist children or to reincarnate a cult leader. Someone might even try to get Hitler DNA and try to resurrect him. If cloning will be available to those who can afford it in the future, I can almost guarantee that it will do more harm than good.
